       a "-" indicates a vote opposing Minnesota NOW's position
an "o"indicates the legislator was absent or abstained from voting

HOUSE

1. Health and Human Services: a "+" is a vote against the motion to send the Health and human Services bill backto conference committee (because it didn't include any ant-choice provisions).

2. Food Assistance: a "+" is a vote for an amendment that would have restored state food assistance to non-citizens.

3. Health Care: a "+" indicates votes to expand the MinnesotaCare subsidized insurance program and to give nursing home workers a 4% wage increase. An "=" indicates mixed votes on the issues.

4. Child Care: a "+" is a vote to increase funding for basic sliding fee child care by $27 million a year.

What do the Voting Records mean?

If a legislator got four "plus" (+) signs they are likely to be pro-woman on most issues.  But the floor votes are not necessarily representative of all MN NOW's issues.  This year, the House avoided floor votes on the most controversial social issues (abortion, gay rights, etc.) by handling them in committee; the close floor votes were on spending for low-income women and families.   The Senate did have votes on some controversial social issues on the floor, but almost all spending votes were in committee.  As a result, none of the votes in the House and Senate record are on exactly the same issue.

Positions on Choice

In the House, anyone who voted to return the Health and Human Services bill to conference committee is anti-choice.  There are also over a dozen anti-choice representatives who voted the other way (to accept the bill).  If you think your representative is anti-choice, but voted for the bill, be sure to thank them.  They stood up against MCCL (MN Citizens Concerned for Life, which called on legislators to defeat the bill unless it had anti-choice amendments in it) by taking that vote, and MCCL will give then a hard time about it.
