PUBLIC POLICY ADVOCACY - ISSUE EDUCATION

Minnesota NOW often works in coalition with other community organizations to stay informed on issues, or in supporting or opposing specific pieces of legislation during a legislative session.

Organizations who also do public policy advocacy/legislative lobbying and/or who educate the community on issues of concern to us, include:

Affirmative Options Coalitions, a statewide coalition of organizations and individuals, promotes public policies that create opportunities for low-income Minnesotans to achieve economic security.

Child Care Works Coalition, http://www.childcareworks.org
Child Care WORKS, a statewide coalition of organizations and individuals since 1983, educates about and advocates for quality care and education for all Minnesota's children and their families.

Children's Defense Fund - MN, http://www.cdf-mn.org
Children's Defense Fund Minnesota (CDF-MN) began its work in 1985 to provide a strong and effective voice for the children of MN. Using research and data, CDF-MN works to shape federal, state and local policies that best serves children's needs in a cost-effective manner and pays particular attention to the needs of poor and minority children and those with disabilities.

MN based Dads and Daughters is a national advocacy nonprofit for fathers and daughters. DADs inspires fathers to actively and deeply engage in the lives of their daughters and advocates to transform the pervasive cultural messages that devalue girls and women. DADs is particularly active & effective with their Media Action campaigns to hold advertisers and the press responsible for how they portray girls.

An online network created through the MN Women's Political Caucus Education Fund, eWomenWin is a growing community of ordinary citizens who want to connect with others, learn more about the political process, and empower more women to get involved.

JobsNOW Coalition, http://www.jobsnowcoalition.org
This broad-based, 100+-member coalition of diverse Minnesota organizations was founded in 1982 and is the largest employment policy coalition of its kind in the United States. The JOBS NOW Coalition is committed to the idea that all Minnesota workers will have the opportunity to earn a family-supporting wage. The Coalition advances its agenda through research, education, and advocacy.

Founded in 1983, the Minnesota AIDS Project (MAP) is a statewide, nonprofit agency committed to enhancing the lives of people living with HIV, prevention education for those at risk for HIV, and advocating for the rights of all affected by HIV.

MN Budget Project, http://www.mncn.org/bp
The Minnesota Budget Project - an initiative of the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits - provides independent research, analysis, and outreach on state budget and tax policy issues, emphasizing their impact on low- and moderate-income persons and the organizations that serve them. Their mission is to provide interested citizens, elected officials, and community leaders with timely and accurate information so that they can become more active and effective participants in the public policy debate.

MN Coalition Against Sexual Assault, http://www.mncasa.org
The Minnesota Coalition Against Sexual Assault (MCASA) is a coalition of sexual assault programs committed to ending sexual violence. To that end, the coalition provides technical assistance and support to member programs throughout the state of Minnesota. Through education, MCASA's goal is to change society's attitudes toward sexual violence and its victims/survivors; and to change systems which may further victimize survivors. (See also MCBW)

MN Coalition for Battered Women, http://www.mcbw.org
Minnesota Coalition for Battered Women (MCBW), founded in 1978, is a statewide membership organization of local, regional, and statewide programs advocating on behalf of battered women and their children with the common purpose of ending domestic violence. MCBW's Legislative Advisory Committee and staff develop an annual legislative agenda through a process that includes input from their member programs statewide. The agenda includes state funding priorities for advocacy services and recommended changes in MN law to increase protection for battered women and their children. It also identifies legislation to support, monitor, or research for future consideration.

Minnesota's professional association of nonprofit organizations. Continually working to inform, involve, strengthen, and increase the capacity and effectiveness of nonprofits and the nonprofit sector.

The MN Fair Trade Coalition ( MFTC) is committed to decent wages and working conditions, the preservation of the family farm system, the protection of the environment, and the maintenance of high standards in food safety. It educates citizens about the dangers of the " free trade" agenda to labor, the evironment, agriculature, consumers and social justice. The Coalition works to ensure that any trade agreement made by the U.S. either includes solid fair trade assurances, or is defeated in Congress.

Minnesota Housing Partnership's mission is to advance the preservation and creation of housing affordable to low- and moderate-income people as a means of strengthening communities and families throughout Minnesota. MHP's HousingMinnesota campaign works to increase community and political support to this end.

MN National Organization for Women, http://www.mnnow.org (you're here!)
Minnesota NOW is a multi-issue, grassroots advocate working for women's rights in Minnesota. Unlike single-user groups, Minnesota NOW works on the whole range of women's issues, which allows us to shift focus when the need or desire arises for the maximum benefit of women.

MN Organization on Adolescent Pregnancy, Prevention and Parenting, http://www.moappp.org
Minnesota Organization on Adolescent Pregnancy, Prevention and Parenting (MOAPPP) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to strengthen policies and programs related to adolescent pregnancy prevention, adolescent pregnancy care and adolescent parenting in Minnesota. MN Women's Consortium, http://www.mnwomen.org
The Minnesota Women's Consortium is the only one of its kind in the country. As a statewide collaboration of 170 member organizations, the Consortium serves as a resource center to enhance equality and justice for women and children. The Consortium does not take a stand on issues but rather helps women working for progressive social change stay in touch. As a clearinghouse, the Consortium keeps member organizations informed on issues pertinent to their work, increasing members' strength and impact.

The primary purpose of MWPC parallels that of (national) NWPC - increasing the number of elected and appointed women in office. This has been done by targeting, endorsing, contributing funds and volunteers, working to publicize women's campaigns, and encouraging members to serve on campaign committees. The screening, endorsement and funding of candidates is carried out by a separate Political Action Committee (PAC). MWPC also lobbies on issues of concern to women, and provides a variety of programs for the purpose of informing and energizing its membership.

NARAL Pro-Choice MN, http://www.prochoiceminnesota.org
The mission of NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota is to develop and sustain a constituency that uses the political process to guarantee every woman the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion.

OutFront Minnesota's mission is to make our state a place where GLBT Minnesotans have the freedom, power, and confidence to make the best choices for their own lives. OutFront MN is a community-based, membership organization that serves the statewide GLBT and allied communities of Minnesota with a wide variety of programs and services. As Minnesota's largest GLBT organization, it is the only organization representing the GLBT community on a full-time basis at the MN Legislature.

Planned Parenthood of Minnesota/South Dakota is a non-profit organization which provides reproductive health care to women, men, teens and families each year. PPMSD is an affiliate of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA). We believe that everyone should have access to quality medical care at an affordable cost. PPMSD medical services are complemented by educational programs and advocacy for family planning and reproductive rights.

Pro-Choice Resources (PCR) is a wide-ranging, grassroots organization located in Minneapolis, MN reaching out to thousands each year in Minnesota and throughout the nation, offering a broad range of comprehensive reproductive health education, advocacy and direct services, systems change work and outreach.

Founded in June 1997, Rainbow Families is one of the largest regional lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) parent organizations in the country. From their Minneapolis home, they provide services to more than 2,000 families throughout the Upper Midwest.

Wellstone Action
