Minnesota NOW PAC Candidate Ratings for 2001

The Minnesota NOW Political Action Committee (PAC) has been hard at work reviewing candidates’ endorsement applications for upcoming local elections in MN. Here are ratings to date. Please review PAC Endorsement Guidelines for a fuller understanding of our ratings scale.  Please check back monthly for more candidate ratings as candidates continue to request screenings.

Minnesota NOW formed a Political Action Committee in 1982. Since that time, we have endorsed and supported candidates who will work to advance Minnesota NOW’s issues. Candidates generally contact us to solicit endorsement through our screening process.  Candidates are rated on the basis of their statements, record and leadership on Minnesota NOW’s legislative priorities. The Minnesota NOW PAC’s primary emphases are:

  1. ratification of an unamended Equal Rights Amendment
  2. repeal of all laws restricting safe, legal abortion
  3. protection of lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender civil rights
  4. eliminating racism
  5. freedom from violence
  6. opposition to punitive welfare reform

PAC Ratings Scale:

A—Endorsed: Applicant supports NOW's position on the following six issues: reproductive rights, CEA (Constitutional Equity Amendment (a/k/a ERA), eliminating racism, freedom from violence, lesbian /gay/bisexual/transgender rights, and opposition to punitive welfare reform and has shown leadership on feminist issues.

B—Supported: Applicant supports NOW's position on the issues above, but has not demonstrated strong leadership on feminist issues or supports five of the issues listed above and has shown leadership on feminist issues.

C—Fair: Applicant supports NOW’s position on four of the six issues above and is supportive of feminist issues in general.

D—Poor: Applicant opposes NOW’s stand on two or more of the issues listed above.

F—Rejected: Applicant opposes NOW’s stand on two or more of the issues listed above, and/or takes prominent leadership in opposition to any of NOW’s issues.

NR–No Rating: The PAC feels the applicant is unsuitable in any way.
