Minnesota
NOW is a multi-issue, grassroots advocate working for women's
rights in Minnesota. Unlike single-user groups, Minnesota
NOW works on the whole range of women's issues, which allows
us to shift focus when the need or desire arises for the
maximum benefit of women.
Our
primary emphases are:
- ratification
of an unamended Equal Rights Amendment
- repeal
of all laws restricting safe, legal abortion
- protection
of lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender civil rights
- eliminating
racism
- freedom
from violence
- opposition
to punitive welfare reform; promotion of economic equity
One manner
in which Minnesota NOW carries out its mission is through
promotion of grassroots political activism. This includes
engagement in the legislative process. Under the direction
of the Legislative Coordinator, this work takes many forms.
Primarily during each MN legislative session, we lobby
legislators and government officials, and engage our members
and community activists in our grassroots lobbying efforts.
We:
- monitor
legislation that affects women and families;
- provide
legislative information to members and other women's
organizations through mailings such as the Minnesota
NOW Times and Legislative Updates and Action
Alerts.
- promote
grassroots legislative action via our Legislative Yahoo
Group, Email Activist Alert System and web site;
- testify
at public hearings;
-
hold
legislative issue forums;
- research
and prepare Issue Briefs and Position Papers, and we
- endorse
and support political candidates who will work to advance
MN NOW's issues.
