Headwaters Walk for Justice draws 700 participants
By Kathy Ahrens September 12 was a beautiful day. The sun was shining, music was being played and the dancers were practicing for their big moment. On Boom Island, 700 people representing 92 organizations got together to eat lunch, walk about 3 miles and meet one another. It's a truly fun event. I set up the NOW table next to Jim Ouden from the Emma Norton Residence. They provide housing for women and their families who are in transition from homelessness to self-sufficiency. They are planning and fundraising for a 12 unit building which will house women who have 3 or 4 children. Doing the math tells you that means a potential of 48 children and they are encountering some of the Not In My Back Yard syndrome from future neighbors. This might be a good project for the Foundation or MN NOW to help with. Bruce Sikkema, Marjorie Fish and her partner, John, and I represented NOW on the Walk. We had a good time and a close look at parts of Minneapolis which I, for one, don't visit as often as they deserve. It's an interesting area with varied activities, such as the Stone Arch bridge, the locks at St. Anthony Falls and Riverplace, plus all the houses and buildings on Nicollet Island. We raised $140.00 and got a little exercise. If this event is not of interest to you, please let your officers or Board representative know what you would prefer so we can schedule the things people would enjoy doing. I am available at 612 825-6907 and will return all calls. |
