MN NOW needs an executive director
Dear Editor:
It came as some surprise to me that MN NOW is still debating whether or not to hire an Executive Director. Many not-for-profit organizations rely upon paid staff, including a paid Executive Director, to do the administrative work and coordinate the volunteer efforts.

I believe that MN NOW should hire an Executive Director because:

1. NOW should have a commitment to see that women’s work is compensated fairly. NOW wants companies to value women’s work; NOW should do the same.

2. NOW should recognize that times have changed, partly due to the women’s movement, partly due to economics. The fact is that most women are now employed full-time and do not have the time to devote to volunteer work. That means that in order for the work to be done, it is necessary to pay someone to do it.

MN NOW has been relying upon a few key individuals to volunteer on a full-time basis. And some very special women have been willing to do it because of their commitment to the cause. But the time has come for a change, because the ends do not justify the means.
